Crossfit Trumbull LLC joins the growing number of fitness businesses in town. Former U.S. Marine Capt. Kevin Quinlan, also a certified CrossFit instructor, opened it in December 2011.

New customers must first go through foundations. Workouts incorporate weightlifting, running and kettlebells, to name a few. During one session, clients had two minutes to swing a kettlebell 15 times and run 150 meters. The remaining two minutes is for resting. They had to do about 10 repetitions.
Quinlan taught his fellow Marines when he was enlisted from 2003 to 2009. He worked in the private sector after leaving, but finally decided to achieve his dream of opening his own business. Quinlan is a father of two young daughters.

Q. How did you start in CrossFit?
A. CrossFit was growing in popularity. I found a CrossFit affiliate in the Marine Corps.
Q. Why did you pick Trumbull?
A. We knew we wanted to settle in the Monroe/Trumbull area. This would be a great place to open a business. I saw there was no CrossFit gym.
Q. What is special about the workout program?
A. Constantly varied, functional movements executed at high intensity. The idea is to push yourself as far as you can. You can go in your level of fitness. It's scaled to absolutely anyone.
Q. Who can be in the classes?
A. I've got six kids in the kids program.
Q. How are things going?
A. The coolest part is the community. Going through the workouts together, we have a really strong sense of community here.
