Will Changes Happen In Your State?

The continuing need for alimony in the modern era is a hot topic in the divorce courts. New Jersey is in the process of a major change in their alimony laws. The following are some of the more significant changes:

• In the case of marriages that lasted less than twenty years, alimony also can not last longer than twenty years, unless it is determined that exceptional circumstances exist.

• Judges could end alimony payments if the recipient lives with a partner, even if they don’t marry.

• Judges could lower alimony payments if the payer is unemployed for 90 days or more.

· The law applies mostly, but not only, to future marriages.
