Shelton donation and raising the roof

The building of the Veterans and First Responders center is proceeding according to schedule with the framing of the building currently being erected. At the Sept 10 meeting Mark Lauretti, the mayor of Shelton, along with support from the Shelton town council, made a $75,000.00 contribution to VFW Post 10059 and American Legion. Mayor Lauretti has served as mayor for nearly three decades, making him the longest-serving mayor in Shelton's history. The Town Council of Shelton and Mayor Lauretti have been long time supporters of area veterans. The mayor also made a significant personal gift which will be displayed in the new building: sands from the beach of Iwo Jima, where his father John F Lauretti participated in the battle of Iwo Jima. Additionally, VFW Post 10059 and its' Auxiliary proudly participated in The Veterans Stand Down held at the University of Bridgeport on Friday September 18. The event had representatives from many support organizations to assist veterans in all areas of need. Post 10059 provided bags of personal care items to the attending veterans. The first name on the Trumbull veteran's memorial is Rolf Breuer. Rolf was born 24 Sept 1919 in Hohenllimburg Germany. In 1925 at the age of 6, Rolf and his parents immigrated to the United States. According to the U.S. census of 1940 the family was living in Bridgeport and all of them had become naturalized citizens of the USA. Rolf enlisted into the Army Air force on 18 Sept 1940. Private Breuer was then stationed to Nichols Field in the Philippines & serving as a Private in the 28th Material Squadron, 20th Air Base Group, U.S. Army Air Force. The 20th Air Base Group's station came under Japanese air attack during which most of its equipment was destroyed; this resulted in the group's personnel being used as infantrymen. Private Breuer was captured by the Japanese and was interned in Cabanatuan POW camp in central Luzon, the Philippines: he died in that camp at the age of 22 from malaria 1 Sept 1942. Private Breuer, for your dedication, service, and sacrifice we salute you. You are not forgotten.
