TRUMBULL, CT — A recount of votes in the race for state representative in the 123rd District, which encompasses areas of north and east Trumbull, is scheduled to take place next week, according to a town official.
Democratic Registrar of Voters Jean Rabinow confirmed in an email to Patch the recount is scheduled to take place Monday at noon in the town council room at Town Hall.
According to unofficial results posted to the secretary of state's website as of Friday afternoon, Republican incumbent David Rutigliano received 5,078 votes and an additional 228 votes, while Democrat Bill Mecca received 5,277 votes.
Rabinow said she was unable to confirm the accuracy of those figures but noted over 10,000 votes were cast in the state representative 123 race, and recounts are automatic if the margin of victory is half of 1 percent or less unless waived by the candidate who received less votes.
Mecca confirmed the recount was moving forward in a statement posted to his campaign's Facebook page Wednesday afternoon and noted he called Rutigliano on Election Night to congratulate him on a strong campaign.
"With a result this close, we'll let the recount run its course before anything is final," Mecca wrote on Facebook. "Thank you to everyone who voted, volunteered, and stood with us."
Rabinow confirmed the recount process will be open to the public, during which spectators can watch from a viewing area.
According to Rabinow, counting teams will review every single ballot from the six polling places within the 123rd district, including early, absentee and same-day-registration ballots, and make sure each one is machine-readable.
Any that are not or "contain extra markings that would cast doubt on the voter's intention" will be separated and hand counted while the others are fed into a tabulator, Rabinow said.
Any ballot rejected by a tabulator will also be counted by hand, Rabinow said.
Rabinow noted the recount will likely take several hours and she, along with Republican Registrar of Voters Tracy Vonick and the head moderator, will be available to answer any questions by anyone throughout the process.
At the end of the counting, the results will be announced by the head moderator and entered into the state's election management system, according to Rabinow.

The recount in Trumbull comes on the heels of a historic night for Democrats across the county and also in Connecticut as the top candidates for state office all rolled to victory, according to unofficial results.
In addition to Democratic incumbent Gov. Ned Lamont, Democrats swept all five congressional seats, with Rosa DeLauro, Jim Himes, Luke Bronin, Joseph Courtney and Jahana Hayes all winning.
Also winning reelection were Democrats Attorney General William Tong, Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas, Treasurer Erick Russell and Comptroller Sean Scanlon, according to the Secretary of State's website.
