TRUMBULL, CT — Trumbull police are taking extra precautions while out in the field to protect themselves from the new coronavirus.

Officers are keeping a safe distance whenever possible, limiting interactions and using personal protective equipment, including masks and gloves, when encountering the public, said Trumbull police spokesperson Lt. Brian Weir.

Officers have basic medical training to recognize when medical treatment is needed.

"Officers are provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), to not only protect themselves when interacting with members of the public, but also to protect the public as well," Weir said in a statement. "Specifically, due to the fact that carriers of the coronavirus may not even be aware they are even infected they may not be showing any signs or symptoms, Basic precautions should be met to protect everyone involved."

Weir noted that there has been a drop in vehicle traffic now that many businesses and schools are closed and residents are being encouraged to stay in their homes. That means fewer vehicle stops and crashes for police to investigate and fewer business alarms.
