Eversource Requests Large Gas Rate Hike

HARTFORD, CT — Eversource is requesting an average 9.2 percent rate increase starting in 2019. The proposal was made as Eversource looks to upgrade its natural gas system with modern piping materials.

“These investments allow us to enhance safety and further modernize the gas distribution system, minimizing repairs and any service interruptions, to ensure our customers have energy for every moment of their lives,” said Eversource President of Gas Operations Bill Akley. “Each mile of leak-prone main we replace makes our gas system safer, stronger and helps the environment.

Eversource has 3,370 miles of natural gas infrastructure in 73 Connecticut communities. It has replaced 145 miles since 2011 and plans to upgrade another 371 miles. Plastic piping is more reliable and resistant to temperature fluctuations than older cast iron and bare steel lines.

The proposal will be reviewed by the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority. Rates changes for some categories of customers could be lower or higher than the average requested increase of 9.2 percent.

The rate would increase 3.7 percent in the second year and 2.9 percent in the third year.

The rate increase would bring in $49 million in the first year $21 million in the second and $16 million in the third year.

Eversource has 232,000 natural gas customers in Connecticut.
