Friday Flashback: Trumbull Wins 1989 Little League World Series
The Trumbull Little League team pulled off a huge upset against Taiwan and broke the country's five-year winning streak.

TRUMBULL, CT—The Trumbull Little League team won the 1989 world series 27 years ago Friday.
Trumbull played against Kang-Tu Little League from Taiwan in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Trumbull went into the game as clear underdog; Taiwan had won the world series 1984-1988 and in one title game won 20-1 and in another 10-2, according to Tom Galla, a coach on the 1989 Trumbull team.

Galla chronicled the team's entire championship run in an article on the Trumbull Historical Society website.
Chris Drury pitched during the game and gave up five hits and four walks, two of which were intentional. But Taiwan was limited to just two runs during Drury's time pitching.

The final score was 5-2.
The team consisted of Dan Brown, Matt Basztura, Paul Coniglio, Chris Drury, Chris Fasano, Dave Galla, Jason Hairston, Todd Halky, Chris Kelly, Cody Lee, Harlen Marks, Ken Martin, Dan McGrath, Andy Paul, & Matt Sewell. They were coached by Tom Galla, Bob Zullo and Ed Wheeler
Since then Drury went on to become an NHL star and he along with Ken Martin, Paul Coniglio and Cody Lee took over the original Stamford Colony Grill and opened locations in Fairfield, Milford and Norwalk.
