Herbst Brother-In-Law Lawsuit Cost Trumbull $25k: Report

The town's insurance carrier settled the lawsuit.

TRUMBULL, CT — A lawsuit against then-Trumbull First Selectman Tim Herbst filed by his estranged brother-in-law cost Trumbull taxpayers $25,000.

The $41,869 settlement was agreed to by the town's insurance carrier, according to the Hartford Courant. Herbst's personal settlement with his brother-in-law Jesse Jablon was undisclosed and likely covered by Herbst's homeowner's insurance.

Jablon alleged in a lawsuit that he was fired Dec. 7, 2013 solely because he was dating Herbst's sister.

Jablon alleged that Herbst fired him from his town position and interfered with his efforts to obtain employment after he began dating Herbst's sister. He also alleged in the lawsuit that Herbst told an employee at Enterprise Car Sales that Jablon was a drug dealer in an effort to get him fired.

Herbst qualified for the Republican primary for governor after finishing second at the convention behind Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton.

Herbst's campaign spokesman Jonathan Conradi told the Courant that the lawsuit was frivolous and the town's insurance carrier decided to settle as a cost-effective solution instead of litigation.

It isn't the end of drama for the Herbst family. Herbs'ts mother Deborah Herbst sued Jablon and her daughter Amanda Herbst. She alleged that the two conspired with their lawyer John Williams to gain access to her iPhone in order to gather messages between her and third parties.

The case is continuing in court.
