MLK Jr.'s Niece Coming to Trumbull

Alveda C. King will discuss and sign her new book, How Can the Dream Survive if We Murder the Children, Oct. 18 at St. Theresa Church.

According to its description, the book addresses abortion.

"This compelling question impacts nations and generations of human beings, many of whom have experienced physical, emotional and spiritual oppression spanning the course of many lifetimes. How Can The Dream Survive brings hope, light and life to those who have pondered the issue of abortion, and whose questions have yet to be answered: Is abortion a civil right?  Is abortion good for women?  What's so bad about genocide?  What would Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. say about abortion?  Who are the survivors?  What about life, liberty and justice for all?"

King herself has had abortions and runs a blog called Priests for Life. She also has a facebook page.

Clarissa Cincotta, director of Fairfield County Rachel's Ministry, said King is a "phenomenal" speaker.

"She sees how the civil rights movement has a connection to the abortion movement," Cincotta said. "She brings God into her talk."

King is the daughter of the late civil rights activist Rev. A.D. King and his wife Naomi Barber King.

"Her family home in Birmingham, Alabama, was bombed, as was her father's church office in Louisville, Kentucky. Alveda was jailed during the open housing movement. She sees the pro-life movement as a continuation of the civil rights struggle," according to a press release.

"She is a former college professor, served in the Georgia State House of Representatives and is a bestselling author. She is an accomplished actress and songwriter. The Founder of King for America, Inc., Alveda is also the recipient of an honorary Doctorate of Laws degree from Saint Anselm College. She has served on several boards, including Heartbeat International, Georgia Right to Life, MLK Center, Bible Curriculum in Public Schools and Abortion Recovery International (ARIN). She is also a member of the National Black Prolife Coalition (NBPC)."

For the Roman Catholic Chuch, October is  "Respect Life Month."
