Family: Husband Seth Nuland, 53, Children Jacob Nuland, Alec Nuland and Lily Nuland who all went or are attending Trumbull Public Schools. My kids had extra challenges due to medical and developmental issues in school which caused me to become an advocate for meeting the needs of all learners.
Family in government: no
The single biggest issue in town is ______, and I plan to do this about it:
budgetary issues. I hope to go through the budget very carefully to make sure we are meeting the needs of all of our students, including typical and exceptional students. With the big cuts of the past, many important positions got cut. I want to make sure we are using our American Cares Act (covid) money in a way that isn't creating recurring expenses that will cause funding cliffs. I would also like to restart the committee to look at later school start times for the high school and middle school, and as well as a long term facilities plan.
Critical differences between me and my opponents:
I have experience with instructional technology (a master's degree) which is very much needed now. I also have experience with advocating for students with special needs and can rein in expenses by getting them what they need early. I have been on the PTA/PTSA executive boards at all levels so I am used to leading and know what the students need. I am a moderate who can see both sides of issues and I try to listen to everybody before trying to solve a problem and then I roll up my sleeves and come up with solutions.
Accomplishments:
VP of PTA - Daniels Farm. President of PTA - Hillcrest. Co-President of PTSA Trumbull High School. Parent Liason for the upcoming Elite bookstore project. I have also handled big budgets on publishing and web design projects.
Other issues:
Make sure that students have evidence based resources for academic and social /emotional development success and that social emotional development remains a high priority even after the pandemic is over while keeping an eye out for funding cliffs that may be created with use of the covid relief money from federal and state resources. Reexamine later school start times for the health of our students (According to the American Academy of Pediatrics school for middle high school should not start until 8:30 am) Make sure the BOE is being proactive and fiscally responsible and not reactive creating unnecessary costs Revisit the scheduling needs at the high schools for the class of 2023 and beyond which require more credits than previous classes
What else would you like voters to know about you?
I have always volunteered in our community and am happy to be a public servant and feel I would be a real asset to the board and look out for the best education possible for our students.
