Trumbull Man's Killer Sentenced
Trumbull native Kevin Sutherland was killed in Washington, D.C. on July 4, 2015.
TRUMBULL, CT — The then-teen who stabbed Trumbull native Kevin Sutherland to death on July 4, 2015 was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
Sutherland, 24, was stabbed to death on a Metro train by Jasper Spires, then 18-years-old. Spires was arrested on robbery charges two days before the murder and was released the day prior.
Spires pleaded not guilty then not guilty by reason of insanity, but a psychiatric evaluation found that he could be held criminally responsible for his actions, according to the Trumbull Times. He then accepted a plea deal.

About 40 Sutherland supporters attended the sentencing hearing and more than 60 letters were sent to the judge.
Sutherland graduated from Trumbull High School in 2009 and worked as a digital political strategist for New Blue Interactive. He also interned on two congressional campaigns for U.S. Rep. Jim Himes.
