There was other work that needed to be completed in the police building to support the additional demands of the expanded Communications Center. This work included upgrades or replacement for: the electrical system; the uninterrupted power supply (UPS); the emergency generator; parts of the HVAC heating and cooling system; and security components throughout the building.
Construction of the current police headquarters on Edison Road began in 1979 and the building was opened in 1980. Inside the Communications Center, dispatchers receive all 911 calls for the town and direct the response of the appropriate emergency services, including police, EMS or one of the three fire departments. Dispatchers have access to various telephone and computer systems, as well as multiple radio channels that are used to coordinate first responders on a 24 hour basis, every day of the year.
The Communications Center was an essential piece of an on-going radio system upgrade for the police department, which was approved by the town as part of a larger capital improvement project. The radio system upgrade will provide new radios for each officer and vehicle, and will operate on newer reliable digital technology, which is the current industry standard. It also required the modernization of the dispatch consoles to house the new equipment. This work on the radio system is expected to be completed within the year.
