TRUMBULL, CT — The 2023 municipal election is heating up in Trumbull and there are plenty of local races with candidates eager to serve in elected office.

Trumbull Patch asked candidates to answer questions about their campaigns and will be publishing candidate profiles as Election Day draws near.

Democrat Joanne Glasser Orenstein, 64, is a Trumbull resident running for Town Council in District 4.

Health & Wellness Director, Lakewood-Trumbull YMCA.

Do you have a family? If so, please tell us about them.

Married to Jay Orenstein 40 years, 3 grown children, 2 dogs and 2 cats.

Does anyone in your family work in politics or government?

Nope.

Have you ever held a public office, whether appointive or elective?

trumbull Town Council 2019-21.

Now we'd like to ask a few questions about your reasons for running and your general views on politics and government. First, why are you seeking this office?

I have the desire to make the world a better place. I am a good listener and I care deeply about helping everyone achieve their goals.

Please complete this statement: The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is ___, and this is what I intend to do about it.

Feeling like their voice matters; whether it’s about what books their kids can read in school, or what the condition of their roads are: I will listen and do my best to help.

What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?

I have done a lot in town in all kinds of capacities. I want everyone to have the chance to realize their best selves, and I want to help them get there.

If you are challenging an incumbent, in what way has the current officeholder failed the community?

By being too decisive.

What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign?

Keeping the schools, EMS, fire and police well funded and well staffed while keeping taxes in check.

What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?

I was on Town Council during the pandemic when the whole world seemed upside down. I showed up for every meeting and was always prepared. I care about doing the job well not for my agenda but to be the best representative for my district and all of Trumbull.

What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?

Do what you love.
