Trumbull Resident Named 2022 Environmental Champion: Aquarion

TRUMBULL, CT — A Trumbull resident was among five winners of the Aquarion Water Company's 2022 Environmental Champion Awards.

According to a news release, the company celebrated all five winners during a June 4 ceremony at Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo.

Mary Ellen Lemay, a passionate advocate for sustainability in the Trumbull community, was one of the listed winners.

According to the Aquarion, Lemay serves as the chair of the town's Conservation Commission and is a member of Sustainable Trumbull, an organization devoted to clean energy initiatives and town-wide recycling.

Known to friends and co-workers as MEL, Lemay is a true environmental hero for her town, according to Aquarion.

Recently, her efforts have been dedicated to securing municipal funding to support both 1,000 Trees for Trumbull, a tree replacement program, and the expansion of the community garden at Abraham Nichols Park to include vegetable patches for local food banks.

"MEL's continued actions to protect her community's environment and natural resources have inspired many of her fellow Trumbull residents to join her efforts," the company said in a news release.

Annually, the Environmental Champion Awards recognize organizations and individuals in the large and small business, non-profit, adult, and student categories. Community members across Connecticut dedicate themselves to preserving the state’s environmental resources and pursuing solutions for sustainability, according to Aquarion.

"Preserving Connecticut's beautiful waterways, land, and wildlife is vital to our state's future," Donald Morrissey, president of Aquarion Water Company, said in a news release.
