Woman Who Drowned In Trumbull Identified As Bridgeport Resident

A woman who drowned in the Pequonnock River in Trumbull Thursday night has been identified by police as Nylkia Hernandez, 41, of Bridgeport.

TRUMBULL, CT — A 41-year-old woman who drowned in the Pequonnock River in Trumbull Thursday night has been identified by police as Nylkia Hernandez of Bridgeport.

Hernandez was observed by witnesses in the area of the Pequonnock River, near Quarry Road, prior to her body being discovered. She was found unresponsive in the water between White Plains Road and Quarry Road in Trumbull, according to police.

"There were other individuals in the area during this time, who eventually observed the woman in the water and called 911," police said in a news release issued Thursday night.

Police, fire and EMS workers from Trumbull arrived shortly after, pulled Hernandez out of the river, and took over her medical care. Trumbull EMS took her to Saint Vincent's Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

The State Medical Examiner determined Friday that her cause of death was accidental drowning, according to police.

Swimming and water activities in the area of the river where the woman was found are prohibited, according to police.

Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
