Mboob also entered a guilty plea to risk of injury to a child. Police said a child was in the Brooklyn Street apartment at the time of the crime.

At 12:07 p.m. on July 17, 2023 , Vernon police responded to the Ledgecrest apartment complex at 79 Brooklyn Street for a welfare check.

Upon arrival, they discovered the body of a woman, later identified as Anastasia Paul, 22, of Vernon, Capt. Robert Marra said at the scene.

After receiving calls requesting a welfare check on the woman, Vernon police went to the building, only to find Paul dead.

Her death was determined to be suspicious and Vernon detectives and the state police Central District Major Crime Squad were called to the scene to investigate, Marra said at the time.

Mboob was quickly determined to be a person of interest, police said.

Though strangulation was a listed charge, Mboob entered the guilty pleas to just the murder risk charges, records show.
