VERNON, CT — The Vernon Board of Education has outlined a timeline for its search for a new superintendent, including focus groups in May, application deadlines at the end of the month and interviews in June.
In an update to families, the district said the board met April 27 as the Superintendent Search Committee to discuss the hiring timeline, focus groups and survey, and board expectations.
The district is working with the New England School Development Council, or NESDEC, to assist with the search. According to the update, the lead NESDEC consultant is Vonda Tencza, identified by the district as a former superintendent of schools in Woodbridge and past interim superintendent in Brookfield this school year.
The posting for the Vernon superintendent position is scheduled for the week of May 4, and the closing date for applications will be May 29, according to the district. The update says NESDEC will recruit and advertise the position throughout the Northeast U.S. through websites, bulletins and journals.
The Board of Education also released dates for four focus groups in May at Vernon Center Middle School. Administrators are scheduled to meet Tuesday, May 12, at 2:45 p.m. in the Library Media Center. Staff are scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, at 3:45 p.m. in the auditorium, followed by a community session Tuesday, May 12, at 6 p.m. in the auditorium. Teachers are scheduled to meet Wednesday, May 13, at 3:45 p.m. in the auditorium.
In the update, the district said, “The above stakeholders are invited to attend these sessions at the respective day and time at Vernon Center Middle School.” The district also said, “These focus group sessions will allow for input and feedback to create a ‘Candidate Profile’ that determines the characteristics, needs and expectations for a new Superintendent of Schools in Vernon.”
An electronic survey will also be open to everyone, according to the district. Superintendent search committee information is scheduled to be posted starting May 5 on the Vernon Public Schools website.
The board expects to continue its work in June with two preparation workshops in early June and two rounds of interviews in late June, according to the update. The district said the board’s goal is to name a candidate on July 6, 2026, which the update identifies as the last day of employment for the current superintendent.
