1. Vernon Officials Pushing Petition Protesting Proposed Eversource Rate Increase (patch.com) — Vernon’s mayor and Town Council are urging residents and other Eversource customers to sign an online petition opposing a proposed double‑digit electric rate hike. Local leaders warn the increase, expected to be filed with regulators next month, would strain family budgets and raise municipal costs for schools and public buildings, and they want strong Vernon participation before PURA reviews the request.
2. As Search For His Replacement Intensifies, Vernon Superintendent Gets Another State Accolade (patch.com) — Vernon’s longtime school superintendent Joseph Macary has been tapped for the governor’s new commission on K‑12 funding just as the town races to choose his replacement. The Board of Education, working with NESDEC, has closed applications, held focus groups, and plans interviews this month, aiming to name a new superintendent by July 6, Macary’s last day in Vernon.
3. June Exhibition Featuring Lake Maschino-Smith (therepublic.com) — An ongoing June art exhibition in Vernon showcases local artist Lake Maschino-Smith’s sculptural and photographic work at Perceptions Yoga, Mindfulness & Art’s historic Vernon galleries. Vernon residents can visit during regular gallery hours or attend the closing reception on Saturday, June 27, to meet the artist and enjoy refreshments while exploring how his light-driven pieces transform throughout the month.
4. State officials warn parents about online group targeting Connecticut teens (wfsb.com) — State officials are warning parents about an online group called 764 after a Vernon teen, later identified as a victim, was arrested in 2023 for school bomb threats linked to exploitation. Authorities say the group targets vulnerable Connecticut teens through gaming and social apps and are holding an informational meeting at Avon High School to help parents spot red flags.
5. 97,000 CT residents to learn part or all of their medical debt has been erased (nbcconnecticut.com) — Thousands of Connecticut residents, including some in Vernon, will soon learn that part or all of their medical debt has been wiped out through a state partnership with a national nonprofit. Rep. Kevin Brown of Vernon backed the legislation, which automatically forgives qualifying debts and notifies people by mail, with no application required.
