STORRS, CT — The University of Connecticut is launching a new campus-wide initiative called "AI for ImpaCT," an effort led by the Division of Academic Affairs and the Provost’s Office to expand artificial intelligence best practices across education, research, innovation, public engagement, and workforce development.
Officials said the initiative is designed to bring together AI-related work already underway across UConn.
"As Connecticut’s flagship public research university, UConn said it is positioned to connect expertise from multiple disciplines and help students, employers, communities, and policymakers better understand the opportunities and challenges tied to artificial intelligence," officials said.
According to the university, AI for ImpaCT will create a structure to support collaboration, share resources, and identify emerging priorities. The effort is also tied to UConn’s broader role in helping Connecticut respond to fast-changing technology and the growing use of AI in education, research, and the workforce, officials said.
Interim Provost Pamir Alpay said the initiative is intended to shape how AI is used across core parts of university life. “The future of AI will depend not only on technological innovation, but on how we apply it” says Alpay. “Through AI for ImpaCT, we will work to ensure that we integrate AI thoughtfully into our teaching, learning, and research to support academic excellence and promote positive life-long outcomes for our students.”
UConn said the initiative will build on work that is already happening across the university instead of starting from scratch. The stated goal is to connect those efforts in one framework that supports shared planning and gives faculty, students, and other stakeholders clearer ways to collaborate.
The university also said AI for ImpaCT is meant to create opportunities for learning, research, and workforce development that will benefit communities across Connecticut. That includes public engagement and work intended to help employers and policymakers navigate the changing landscape around artificial intelligence.
