VERNON, CT — Field inspections for Vernon's state-mandated property revaluation are underway, with contractors expected to visit properties throughout town through September.
The town has contracted with Vision Government Solutions to assist with the revaluation process by collecting data and conducting real estate inspections. Connecticut law requires municipalities to complete a property revaluation every five years to keep property assessments current and help ensure property taxes are assessed equitably.
Residents may see Vision Appraisal employees in neighborhoods across Vernon during the inspection period. The employees will carry visible identification badges, wear safety vests and drive clearly marked vehicles. Their identification and vehicle information are also on file with the Vernon Police Department.
"The contractors are working to verify that information we have on file for each property is accurate," Vernon Assessor Todd Helems said in a statement. "In addition to conducting on-site inspections and measuring structures, Vision Appraisal has mailed questionnaires about their property to residents. Our goal is to be accurate and ensure equitable treatment of all taxpayers."
According to the town, inspectors will first knock on the door when they arrive at a property. If no one answers, they may conduct a visual inspection of accessible portions of the property and take exterior measurements to verify information in the town's records, as allowed under state law.
Inspectors also may ask permission to enter a home to verify information such as the number of bedrooms and other property details. Interior inspections are voluntary and will only be conducted with the resident's consent.
Under Connecticut law, municipal assessors, their staff and designated contractors are authorized to inspect improved real property to verify the accuracy of information contained in the assessor's property records.
Residents with questions about the revaluation process can contact the Vernon Assessor's Office at 860-870-3625.
