VERNON, CT — The diverse culinary tastes of Nepal should soon be coming to Vernon along with a new restaurant.

The Vernon Planning and Zoning Commission Tuesday continued its review of a proposed Nepali restaurant at 1189 Hartford Turnpike. The site plan will be examined again on Aug. 18, Vernon Director of Development Services Shaun Gately said.

The restaurant has been proposed for the strip plaza at 1189 Hartford Turnpike and fills a vacancy of more than four years. It had previously been a former Cape Cod style house converted into the Wine Seller Liquor store, but the business was renamed Discount Wine & Liquors Shop when it moved into a completely renovated and expanded plaza in Nov. 2021.

Both a sit-down restaurant and drive-up window have been proposed in the site plan. The drive-up would require a driveway to be constructed behind the plaza traveling from east to west, Gately said.

Here's a description of the food from the Nepal Tourism Board:

"The multi-ethnic and multi-cultural disposition of Nepal offers unlimited choice of cuisines based on region, religion, ethnicity, culture, festivals, environment and diverse climatic conditions.

"Nepal is the land of diverse cuisine. The vast number of ethnic groups have their own delicacies depending on the topography and climate of their region. Rice is the major source of energy in the country, Nepali people consume it two times a day, as lunch and dinner, on a daily basis. However, side dishes may vary from lentils to vegetable curry to meat curry to extremely spicy pickles and in the Himalayan region their meals are completely different."

The Nepal Tourism Board offers several examples of the national dishes on its website.
