VERNON, CT — An 18-year-old Vernon man drowned after falling into a pond while paddleboarding in Massachusetts Monday evening.
Emergency responders were summoned to the scene, at Jenkins Pond in Falmouth, for a reported drowning around 5:49 p.m., according to the Falmouth Police Department.
A 911 caller reported the victim had gone underwater and he couldn't find him. According to police, the victim fell off his paddleboard.
Falmouth Fire and Rescue personnel deployed a boat and got the victim out of the water, and immediately began life-saving measures.
The victim was rushed to Falmouth Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased, police said.
Officials as of mid-day Tuesday had not released the identity of the victim.
Danielle Whitney, a spokesperson for the Cape & Islands District Attorney's Office, confirmed Tuesday that the victim was an 18-year-old from Vernon.
The Falmouth Marine and Environmental Services and the Massachusetts State Environmental Police responded to assist.
Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office are in charge of the investigation.
The Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will be conducting an autopsy.
