Cell Phone Stop Turns Into Drug Arrest In Vernon

VERNON, CT — What started as a ticket for cell phone use turned into the drug-related arrest of a driver in Vernon on Thursday, a police log book entry indicates.

The incident took place at 1:31 p.m., according to the log book entry.

After the stop along the 1200 block of Hartford Turnpike, police discovered that the driver, identified as 37-year-old Hartford resident Israel Campis, possessed a "variety of illegal drugs," including fentanyl, according to a log book entry.

In addition to the cell phone violation, Campis was charged with operating a drug factory, possession of a controlled substance (six counts), possession of a narcotic substance with the intent to sell (four counts) and delivery of drug paraphernalia, records show.

Campis was held overnight on a $50,000 bond and was to appear in Rockville Superior Court Friday, according to the log book entry.
