VERNON, CT — Nearly 4,800 people have signed a petition organized by Vernon officials opposing Eversource's proposed 13 prcent residential electric rate increase, with residents and customers statewide able to add their names through Oct. 31.

Mayor Dan Champagne and members of the Vernon Town Council are urging Eversource customers to sign the petition, which will be forwarded to the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority.

The petition is available online at the town's website: Petition Against Eversource's 2026 Rate Increase.

People may sign regardless of where they live. The petition will close Oct. 31.

Eversource filed its rate increase request in July. If approved, the proposal would raise residential electric rates by 13% beginning in July 2027.

"Not everyone has the time to attend PURA hearings or to make their views known to the agency," Champagne said. "We are trying to make it as easy as possible for Eversource ratepayers to voice their opposition to the rate increase to PURA."

"At a time of ever-increasing energy costs, we all need a break and urge PURA to limit any increase," he said.
