VERNON , CT — On Tuesday, Vernon residents cast their votes (those who did not opt for early voting) for several key federal and state positions, including the office of governor, Congress, state representative, and state senate.
People who are voting on election day can, if they choose, donate pet food to the Vernon Pet Pantry or new socks and underwear to the "Socktober" campaign that assists clients at
Vernon's Cornerstone shelter.
Collection boxes will be at each voting location on election day.
The boxes will be set up in the hallways outside the main door to the voting area.
The Vernon Pet Pantry was established in October 2024 to help collect dog and cat food for families struggling to feed their beloved family pets
The annual "Socktober" appeal was started several years ago by former Vernon Public Schools student Tommy Glinski and has resulted in the collection of thousands of pairs of new socks and underwear for Cornerstone's clients.
Donations are optional and are not required to participate in the voting process.
For The U.S. House, the candidates are longtime Democratic incumbent Joe Courtney and Republican challenger George Austin.
