One of Vernon's most notorious commercial vacancies has been sold.
The parcel at 343 Hartford Turnpike, on which the former Bennigan's pub and restaurant sits, has been bought by a company called 343 Hartford Tkpe LLC from Prudential Mortgage.
The transaction closed on Tuesday for $730,000, according to records in the town clerk's office.
The holding company has a 201 Stoner Dr. address in West Hartford, but Economic Development Coordinator Shaun Gately said the buyer is a local doctor. He said the property has not been designated for a restaurant, but did not say if it would eventually house a medical practice.
He did say it would likely be converted into some type of office space.
When asked if the doctor was former mayor Ellen Marmer, a pediatric cardiologist, he said it was not.
The Bennigan's, part of a larger chain by that name, closed several years ago and the property has been dormant for some time. Many residents considered it an eyesore because ownership would allow the grass to grow long and then cut it when chastised by town officials.
Its 1.42 acres have a prominent location on Route 30 near Exit 67 on Interstate-84. Route 30 is known locally as Hartford Turnpike.
