2011 Gene Pitney Scholarship Presented
2011 Gene Pitney Music Scholarship Winner Named
AMANDA CONNOR, a graduating senior from Somers High School was chosen as the 2011 recipient of the GENE PITNEY SCHOLARSHIP in Music Award by the Gene Pitney Commemorative Committee. The $1,000 scholarship award was presented on Wednesday, May 25th, 2011 in a private ceremony held at Russ's Time Diner in Rockville, CT. Cliff Edwards, the committee's retiring President, presented the award to Amanda while her family and music teacher looked on. The award this year is the first one to go to a Somers, CT student since the committee voted last year to include Somers to the list of qualifying schools. Prior to this, only Rockville High School students were eligible.
Since the Pitney family has resided in Somers for many years now, and since the largest fund raiser for the scholarship fund takes place in Somers (Cars Are The Stars - Show & Shine) the committee voted to offer the scholarship opportunity to Somers High School as well.
Attending the ceremony were Amanda's mom & dad, Beth & Tim Connor, grandmother Joan Hirsh, brother Ryan Connor and Somers Musc Teacher Tony Campanelli. Helping to present the award were GPCC Scholarship Chairperson Sandi LaChappelle, GPCC Vice President Brian Frederick, Treasurer Rob Warner, and members Mary Edwards, and Stu & Norine Edwards.
