High School

Oh, high school. Where would we be without you?

I’m moving off to college in a few days so, naturally, I’ve been reminiscing about high school.

Things I will miss about high school:

  • Friends.
  • People who weren’t really friends but were just always around.
  • Volleyball games, musicals, chorus, marching and symphony band, all the other extra activities.
  • Locker of four years.
  • The end of the hallway where everyone hung out.
  • Inspirational teachers.
  • Snow days.
  • Snow days when it didn’t snow.
  • The new auditorium.
  • The underclassmen that weren’t annoying.
  • Getting my parents to pay for everything.
  • The two years I wasn’t yet legal to work.
  • Slacking off sometimes - specifically at the end of senior year when no one had to take the final exams but we reviewed the course material anyway.
  • Getting a free planner.

Things I will not miss about high school:

  • Science.
  • Math.
  • Bells.
  • Those people (you know who you are).
  • Having to sign out to go to the bathroom.
  • Not being allowed to sign out to go to the bathroom.
  • Being a stupid teenager.
  • The cafeteria running out of ketchup.
  • The underclassmen who were annoying.
  • Homework and worksheets.
  • Textbooks and carrying them places.
  • Gym class (but I’ll miss the people who walked with me).
  • Applying to colleges.
  • Choosing the college.
  • Applying for scholarships.
  • The bus (except, again, I will miss the person who sat with me).
  • Having to carry my backpack, books, volleyball sports bag, and flute home on the bus.
  • Not having enough time in the morning to wake up.
  • Grades.
  • Drama.

Some valuable advice for my high school freshman self ...

  • You are going to feel overwhelmed after joining two hundred extracurricular activities - take the time to enjoy them rather than becoming cranky due to over exhaustion and lack of success.  Don’t be a downer, you were the one who agreed to this madness!
  • You are going to get some bad grades - just don’t make it a habit!
  • You are going to meet some mean-spirited people.  Don’t bother with them.  They are vampires who want to eat you and turn you into a mean-hearted person.  Don’t let them eat you.
  • You are going to have many ambitions and some will not be successful.  Do not think they are stupid!  If your heart is in the right place, it doesn’t matter how silly they seem.
  • You are going to say some stupid things.  Luckily, you have a friend who will let you know exactly when you have said/done something stupid.  It isn’t supposed to make you feel better.  Just be happy you have a friend!
  • No, but seriously, you are going to say some stupid things - don’t dwell on them.  Laugh it off.
  • Also, apologize more.
  • Also, bake your friends chocolate chip pumpkin cookies more often.
  • You’re not the only one who is obsessed with the Daily Show and Colbert Report.
  • You are the only one obsessed with conversation starters.
  • You will hate your hair - go ahead and make it the topic of your college essay, but then get over it and follow the “curly girl method," a procedure you should have stuck to a LONG time ago (more info in the link below).
  • Gossiping is like throwing a water bottle in a trash can.  It’s handy for the present, but will eventually lead to the downfall of human kind - so don’t do it.
  • Also, don’t be so dramatic.
  • For a while you will go along with the belief that reading isn’t cool.  It isn’t, but do it anyway!
  • You will be tempted to buy a knock-off brand of Uggs.  Don’t.
  • Don’t leave status updates on Facebook, it‘s, it‘s just pointless, OK.
  • You will eventually leave the friends you’ve been seeing everyday for four years.  Be more aggressive about getting them to sign your yearbook.

Overall, high school was great fun and I will never forget all the awesome people I met.  But for now, I think it’s finally time to move on and look ahead.
