VERNON, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire.

Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT

  • The women's rugby club at Eastern Connecticut State University claimed the New England Collegiate Cup (NECC) championship on Nov. 9 at the 2019 Plymouth Rock Bowl, capping off their undefeated season. Among the players were Vernon residents Micaela Czapla, who majors in Pre-Social Work; Taylor Krajewski, who majors in Criminology; and Deanna Pellegrino, who majors in English. A tier-two team in the New England-Wide Collegiate Rugby Conference (NEWCRC), the club earned the top spot in their division, scoring 350 points with only 44 points against them. The NEWCRC is an independent Division II collegiate conference for both women's and men's programs. Eastern's women's rugby club was founded in fall 2016. Today the team has more than 30 members.

  • Senior Morgan Fisher of Vernon is the top goaltender on the UConn women's ice hockey team this season. She has started 10 of 16 games, registering a 2.30 goals against average and a .911 save percentage through Dec. 2.
