Car Flips Into River Near Historic Vernon Mill

A car had to be pulled from the River after a crash in Vernon Monday.

VERNON, CT — A car wound up in the a river late Monday morning at the parking lot of a Vernon apartment complex.

The crash took place just before noon, on the Route 83 side of the old Talcott Mill bridge over the river. The actual address of the historic mill-turned-apartments is 47 Main St.

A black Ford Taurus could be seen on its roof, just to the north of the bridge. It had caromed down a steep embankment after veering across the driveway and its front end was in the water. The vehicle's airbag system had deployed.

Police at the scene said the driver, a woman whose age had not yet been determined, was able to climb out of the car. She was taken to an area hospital as a precaution, police said.

The cause is the crash is under investigation.

The bridge was part of an extensive renovation project that turned the Victorian Era mill into apartments in 2017.

Police said a heavy wrecker was being called in to hoist the vehicle from the riverbank.
