VERNON, CT — A toddler injured in a harrowing fall off the Rails-to-Trails system in Vernon Saturday is expected to "fully recover," a police report indicates.

Police released more information on the incident Monday morning. The child was 2 years old, police said. The determination was the fall was accidental, according to a report.

The incident took place at about noontime on the trail system near Washington Street and Brookview Drive, police said. It's a area of the trail system bordered by steep cliffs.

According to a report a woman was walking along the trail with three children in all. One child came close to the edge at which time, the woman reached out. In the process, the stroller holding the 2-year-old slipped off the trail and careened down a steep embankment.

The stroller and the child fell about 50 feet, according to a report.

The child was rescued quickly in a wooded area by first responders, according to a report. Life Star helicopter was initially called, but then canceled. The child was taken to Connecticut Children's Medical Center via ambulance, according to a report.
