Vernon police confirmed this week that a toddler injured in a harrowing fall off the Rails-to-Trails system has recovered.

VERNON, CT — Vernon police confirmed this week that a toddler injured in a harrowing fall off the Rails-to-Trails system has recovered.
Police also reiterated that the incident was an accident. The mom of the 2-year-old visited first responders recently to thanks them, police said.
The incident took place at about noontime on Sept. 12 on the trail system near Washington Street and Brookview Drive, police said. It's a area of the trail system bordered by steep cliffs.

According to a report, the toddler's mom was walking along the trail with three children in all. One child came close to the edge at which time, the woman reached out. In the process, the stroller holding the 2-year-old slipped off the trail and careened down a steep embankment.
The stroller and the child fell about 50 feet, according to a report.

The child was rescued quickly in a wooded area by first responders, according to a report. Life Star helicopter was initially called, but then canceled. The child was taken to Connecticut Children's Medical Center via ambulance, according to a report.
