VERNON, CT — A child was seriously injured in a fall on the Rails-to-Trails system in Vernon Saturday, police said.

The incident took place just after noon on the trail system near Washington Street and Brookview Drive, police said. It's a area of the trail system bordered by steep cliffs.

The child, toddler aged, was hiking with a parent and other children, Vernon police spokesman Lt. William Meier said. Meier said the injuries were series and "potentially life-threatening."
