Connecticut Rivers Council Launches Incentive Campaign To Recruit 1,300 Cub Scouts In Vernon, Region

VERNON, CT — The Connecticut Rivers Council of Scouting America has launched a statewide campaign aimed at introducing more families in Vernon and the region to Cub Scouting through fishing, outdoor activities and family adventures.

The "Hooked on Scouting" initiative seeks to recruit 1,300 new Cub Scouts during the fall 2026 membership campaign by encouraging children and their families to spend time outdoors and reconnect with nature.

As part of the program, the first 1,000 youth who join Cub Scouting between Aug. 31 and Oct. 31 will receive a complimentary fishing pole while supplies last. The giveaway is supported by community partners and sponsors.

New Cub Scout packs will also be invited to participate in council-sponsored fishing events and other outdoor activities throughout the fall, providing families with opportunities to experience Scouting through hands-on activities.

Connecticut Rivers Council officials said the campaign is designed to promote outdoor recreation while helping young people develop leadership, confidence, resilience and teamwork through Cub Scouting.

The initiative comes as many families seek opportunities to spend more time together away from electronic devices and engage in outdoor activities, according to the council.

The campaign will officially begin during the Connecticut Rivers Council's annual Membership Kickoff events, where volunteers will prepare for the fall recruiting season and receive training on welcoming new families into Scouting.
