NORTH CENTRAL, CT — The state Department of Transportation has been installing new traffic signals throughout Hartford and Tolland counties and elsewhere in Connecticut that are designed to be more visible.

DOT officials said Thursday that the new traffic lights feature reflective backplates. They form a 3-inch reflective yellow border around the lights that improve visibility, especially at night, DOT officials said.

Two spots that already feature the new signals are West Street, or state Route 527 in Vernon and the Buckland Hills retail district in Manchester.

West Street is used by residents of several towns to get to the Exit 66 exchange on Interstate 84.

The new signal at Buckland Hills also features an illuminated "no turn on red" sign situated near the Plaza at Buckland Hills shopping center that operates according to the traffic flow.
