VERNON, CT — The Dollar General store proposed to take over two vacancies in Downtown Rockville will not be your typical Dollar General. It will take on a unique look in line with the historic district's requirements.

The plans were submitted last week for property owner West Hartford Gas Inc. Two parcels are involved — 38 and 42 East Main St. That's the corner of East Main and Court Street. The plans call for the demolition of both vacant buildings and replacing them with a 10,764-square-foot retail store. Parking would be to the rear of the building.

The Dollar General would be corporately owned, officials said.

If the plans are approved through the local regulatory process, the Dollar General in Rockville would be the third in Vernon. Stores are currently located on both Route 83 and 30 in town.

The Rockville version would not have a typical Dollar General look because it sits in a historic overlay zone, Vernon development director Shaun Gately said. That means there are certain requirements regarding aesthetics.

The new store would take on the look of having a second-floor, but be a one-story operation, Gately said.
