VERNON, CT — A driver came whipping off the highway, sped through a red light and wound up with a drunken driving charge on Route 83 in Vernon, police said.

At 1:31 a.m. Saturday, an officer in an unmarked police cruiser was heading north on Talcottville Road when he noticed a white, four-door sedan run a red light coming off the Interstate-84 off ramp, according to an arrest report. Talcottville Road is state Road 83.

The driver was speeding and swerving, according to an arrest report.

The officer stopped the vehicle and the driver, a 27-year-old Manchester woman, failed a sobriety test at the scene and then a breath test at police headquarters, according to an arrest report.

She was charged with driving under the influence, traveling unreasonably fast, failure to drive in the proper lane, and a traffic control signal violation, according to an incident
