Felon From Maine Found Asleep With Gun In Vernon: Report

VERNON, CT — A man found passed out in a Cadillac on Route 30 in Vernon turned out to be a convicted felon illegally carrying a gun, police said.

According to a report, police located 29-year-old Maine resident Ian Barwise along the 1200 block of Route 30 at 12:17 a.m., asleep in the 2016 black Caddy. Police said they went looking for him after a roadside assistance service called to say he reported a flat tire but could not be located.

Barwise had a blood alcohol content of .2139, well beyond the legal Connecticut threshold of .08, police said. He had a gun in the car for which he did not have a state permit, according to a report. He was also identified as a convicted felon in his home state.

He was charged with:

  • Illegally carrying a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Criminal possession of a firearm
  • Carrying a pistol without a permit
