Field of Flags Comes to Congregational Church

Church officials said it is "one way to remember each individual, as well as their families and friends, in prayer at our church."

The First Congregational Church on Friday created a "Field of Flags" to honor those who have lost their lives in Middle East conflicts.

At 8 a.m., volunteers began placing a flag on the church lawn for each serviceman and woman who has died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

By afternoon 6,579 flags had been placed.

Church officials said it is "one way to remember each individual, as well as their families and friends, in prayer at our church."

The Field of Flags will be dedicated on Sunday during the 10 a.m. worship service. The Field of Flags will be on display until Thursday, Sept. 13, church officials said.

The Field of Flags program began in 2005 at the Somers Congregational Church.
