Gas Leak Leads to Evacuation in Area of Vernon

The gas leak was reported Thursday afternoon.

VERNON, CT — Police and firefighters rushed to the scene of a gas leak along the 70 block of Elm Street Thursday afternoon.

The initial call came in at about 3:40 p.m., according to Tolland County 911.

Police said the leak was in the road near a home at the corner of Elm and Prospect streets.

The fire department ordered the evacuation of the immediate area. Police said responders were going door-to-door to get people away from the area. Residents were being shuttled to the Senior Center just the road

Utility crews were at the scene by 4 p.m. Police said the area should be clear and safe by 5:30 p.m.
