Giant Crane Company Prepping Vernon Land For Big Move

VERNON, CT — A company that specializes in giant cranes that has deep roots in the area is working on a Vernon parcel to expand into a bigger lot.

That was the word Tuesday from Vernon Economic Development Director Shaun Gately after land clearing and grading began on a parcel located on South Frontage Road.

Shawmut Equipment Company will eventually make the parcel its new home, Gately said.

Earth-moving equipment has been shaping the parcel right next to the Interstate-84 interchange. The land near the eastbound side of the highway had not been previously developed. Shawmut is currently located at 20 Tolland Turnpike (Route 30/83) in Manchester, just over the Vernon line.

The move is just more than 4 miles. No formal move-in timetable has been announced.

Since 1957, Shawmut Equipment has served the heavy equipment industry as a crane dealer.
