VERNON, CT — Ice and snow flying off the roofs of vehicles on Interstate 84 in Vernon caused a pair of weekend crashes, state police said.

And they weren't trucks with hard to reach roofs, state police said.

At 4:26 p.m. on Friday, a 2019 Hyundai Sonata being driven by a 26-year-old Vernon woman was headed east on I-84 , prior to Exit 67, when snow and ice flew off the vehicle in front of her — a 2011 Honda Odyssey with a 61-year-old Hartford woman behind the wheel, according to a crash report.

The barrage caused the Hyundai's windshield to crack, but the driver of the Honda came away with just a verbal warning for failure to clear the roof, according to a crash report.

At 10:18 a.m. on Sunday, what state police described as two "non-commercial vehicles" were heading west in the left-hand lane near Exit 66 on I-84, when ice and show came off the roof of the lead vehicle and hot the front end of the second car, according to a crash report.

The driver was issued a written warning for failing to clear the roof of a non-commercial vehicle, according to a crash report.

Connecticut Public Act No. 13-102 dealing with snow and ice in vehicle roofs states that snow and ice flying off a car, pickup truck or SUV that results in personal injury or property damage can result on a of $200 to $1,000. For a commercial vehicle like a tractor-trailer, the penalties go up to the $500 to $1,250 range, according state law. Otherwise, a violation can cause a $75 fine, according to state law.
