VERNON, CT — The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has identified the truck driver killed in a fiery crash involving his and another tractor-trailer on Interstate 84 last week.

Mohamed Abdullahi Aweis, 28, of Cleveland, OH, was killed in the crash, according to a medical examiner's report. The crash took place at 11:16 p.m. on April 15, but, because the injuries were that severe, it took until Friday to identify him state police said.

At the time of the incident, a Volvo tractor-trailer Truck was parked on the right shoulder on the eastbound side of I-84 in Vernon and a Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound on I-84, approximately one mile prior to Exit 67, according to a crash report.

For "an unknown reason," the Freightliner entered the right shoulder and struck the Volvo, causing the Freightliner to catch fire, a report says.

The operator of the Volvo semi-truck, a 56-year-old Indiana man, sustained no injuries and refused medical treatment. Aweis sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene, state police said in a report.
