VERNON, CT — The Public Works Department will be closed Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day, according to the posted holiday schedule. The closure also means there will be no refuse or recycling collection that day.

Instead, refuse and recycling that would normally be collected Monday will be picked up Tuesday, May 26, 2026, along with that day’s regular collection. The notice states that if delays occur, residents should leave their carts at the curb.

The schedule change affects routine sanitation service tied to the holiday closure. According to the notice, excess refuse and recycling may also be brought to the Transfer Station free of charge throughout the year.

The Transfer Station accepts material on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m., according to the posted schedule. The notice does not list any additional holiday service changes beyond the Memorial Day closure and the one-day collection delay.

For residents with extra trash or recycling during the holiday week, the Transfer Station remains an option outside the Monday closure. The posted information says excess refuse and recycling can be dropped off free of charge during regular operating hours.

The town’s guidance for the holiday week is straightforward: no collection on Memorial Day, Tuesday pickup for Monday routes, and carts should remain curbside if service is delayed. The Public Works Department is scheduled to reopen after the holiday closure, based on the posted Memorial Day schedule.
