More Winter Weather, But Still Just 1 Snow Day For Vernon Schools

The 2018-19 calendar is hanging on in the Vernon school system, despite winter weather … and some quirks are in store for 2019-20.

VERNON, CT — Students in Vernon dodged another snow day on Thursday. Classes were delayed after an icy storm system blew into the area overnight, but when the buses began rolling, it was still just one snow day for the 2019-19 academic year.

Even the animals at the Rockville High School agriculture department were in class, albeit with coats on.

Superintendent of Schools Joseph Macary chuckled at the thought, but admitted it was a decent analogy.

"We have been lucky so far, even with some weather," he said.

As of Thursday, the Vernon Board of Education calendar puts the last day of school for all students and Rockville High School graduation at June 11, he said.

Macary also pointed to some quirks in the 2019-20 academic year. With Christmas falling on a Wednesday, the holiday break will be in the long side — Dec. 20 through Jan. 2, he said.

Macary said a potential presidential primary date is April 28, 2020. If that date holds, teachers would have a professional development day and students would be off because four facilities are used for voting, he said.

The last day of school next year is slated for June 11, 2020, he said.
