New Fall Art Classes at ACE

Offerings for children and adults

Arts Center East will offer the following art classes for children and adults beginning in early September:

ADULT CLASSES

Zentangle – A Fun and Relaxing Meditative Drawing Technique

While Zentangle is a drawing technique that creates beautiful artwork, the focus of this class will be on the relaxing process. You will learn many tangle patterns and explore a variety of media. No experience necessary (Repeat students are welcome. We will build on what you've learned!)

Instructor Elizabeth Krall is a certified Zentangle teacher who received her BA from Trinity College and her M.A.L.S. with a concentration in studio arts from Wesleyan. Her work has been shown in galleries throughout Connecticut.

Dates: Mon. Sept. 11 – Oct. 23 (No class on Oct. 9) (Six Classes)

Time: 10:00 – 12:00

Pastel Painting – All Levels Welcome

Develop confidence with the pastel medium as you learn about building a strong composition, understanding values, creating light and shadow, and creating a cohesive color harmony. You may use photos you have taken yourself for subject matter, or you may bring still life materials. All levels of experience are welcome.

Instructor Jane Penfield has won numerous awards and is a signature member of the Connecticut Pastel Society, and a juried member of the Pastel Society of America, the Salmagundi Club, and Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod. Jane's work can be seen at www.JanePenfield.com

Dates: Tuesday Sept. 19 – Oct. 31 (No Class on Oct. 17) (Six classes)

Writing Workshop

Generate new writing or dust off your memoir, novel, essays, or short stories in this writing workshop. Through in-class prompts and discussions, you’ll learn to effectively use sensory details, create compelling characters and hone your voice as a writer. We will also explore the many paths to publishing.

Instructor: C. Flanagan Flynn is a writer and editor who holds a M.A.L.S. from Wesleyan University. Currently Managing Editor of Brain,Child and Brain, Teen magazines, she’s participated in writing conferences at Harvard University and Trinity College and has edited the work of essayists, memoirists, poets, short story writers, and novelists for nearly two decades.

Dates: Wednesdays, Sept. 13 – Oct. 18(Six classes)

Time: 10 a.m. – noon

Painting with Acrylics – Evening Class

This class will introduce the many ways acrylics can be used to create unique and expressive paintings. We will cover color theory, composition, and the use of mediums to manipulate the paint. The goal of the class is to expand each student’s repertoire whether they are a beginner or intermediate level painter.

Instructor Elizabeth Krall has exhibited in galleries throughout Connecticut and in New York City. She has a Master’s Degree from Wesleyan in Studio Arts, is a Certified Zentangle Instructor and is an alum of Lyme Academy of Art.

Dates: Sept. 13 – Oct. 18 (Six classes)

Time: Wed. 6:30 – 9:00

Weekly Ongoing Watercolor Class

Ongoing watercolor classes are taught using a step by step paint-along method which students of all levels (including beginners) find fun and easy to follow.

Instructor Beth Parys has enjoyed teaching watercolor classes and workshops in the Connecticut/ Massachusetts area for the past fifteen years.

CHILDREN’S CLASS

Fun with Art – Ages 7 – 13

This class will introduce a variety of media and techniques including paint, pastels, pen and ink and Zentangle, a meditative drawing technique. Children will develop their skills, unleash their creativity and have fun in the process. The class will culminate in an exhibit and discussion for students and their families.
