VERNON, CT — A new independent coffee shop has opened on Route 30 in Vernon.

Vernon coffee roasters officially opened Tuesday to steady streams of customers, particularly in the morning. Owner Aymen Harby has brought his previous roasting experience to a storefront in the Vernon Commons shopping plaza at 520 Hartford Turnpike, the local name for Route 30.

Harby began working on the shop in late March. He said the secret to success in the ultra competitive coffee market is "in the roasting."

Vernon Coffee Roasters offers a variety of beans from locations like Colombia, Brazil, Ethiopia, Mexico, Guatemala and Sumatra.

The first two days were a bit involved for Harby because he was by himself. He's in the process of trying to hire a couple of staffers.

"It was hectic," Harby said.

The shop is open —right now — six days a week and Harby said he takes Sundays to do his roasting. He said he would likely go to seven days when the staff is built up. A hiring sign hangs in the window.
