VERNON, CT — The space at Vernon Circle vacated by Angellino's Italian restaurant will be taken over by a new culinary establishment with a different theme, Vernon officials said Monday.

The popular Angellino's served its last plate Saturday, leaving many customers — and ownership — lamenting the loss. But on Monday morning, Vernon Economic Development Coordinator Shaun Gately said plans "have been in the works" for some time for a new restaurant to take over the space on Kelly Road.

The Angellino's building is located across from the Tri-City Plaza and in between a strip commercial center and the Holiday Inn Express.

Gately did not offer a timetable for the new restaurant, but did say it would feature "pub-style" food. The new owners already have signed paperwork to take over the space, he said.

Angellino's had been around for more than two decades and served up meals for both individual tables and groups. On Sunday, ownership sent out an emotional message:

The End Of An Era
To all of our family and friends and our loyal customers that we have met over the last 22 years, It's been a wonderful journey...
Thank you to every person who came here and to me you are all my friends.. We have been here for proposals, showers, rehearsal dinners, weddings, anniversaries, funerals, elections and more...
I hope you will fondly remember all the wonderful and crazy fun times here and yet some sad ones over the years. Many wonderful people have passed that I knew from coming here and they will always carry a special place in my heart.
It was a hell of a good run and I thank you all and love you for making myself and my wonderful staff feel so special ... I'll miss you and eating at Angellino's ...
