New Roof Finally Ready to Go at Vernon Center Middle School

VERNON, CT — A week of light weather is allowing construction crews to finally finish the Vernon Center Middle School roof project, and it's just in time for the start of classes Wednesday.

Superintendent of Schools Joseph Macary said the roof will be done and equipment will be removed by Tuesday.

"The building will be open and safe," he said.

Facing work will still need to be done next month, he said. Summer storms caused construction delays, Macary said.

Meanwhile, Vernon police were advising residents to observe speed limits and be aware that children would be returning to school on Wednesday.

Cars must stop at crosswalks with students preparing to enter and for school buses displaying red flashing lights and stop signs, even on four-lane roads like routes and and 83, police said.

Extra patrols will be deployed on Wednesday to enforce safety and traffic rules, police said.
