Old Mill In Vernon is Gone, But The Property Is Not Forgotten

VERNON, CT - Nearly every trace of old Minterburn Mill, is gone, but Mayor Daniel Champagne said recently that town officials are studying uses for the property.

The brick structure was torn down about a month ago for "safety concerns," Champagne said. The mayor said he contacted the owner, who almost immediately agreed to tear down the red brick structure that dated back to the height of the textile era on the Rockville section of town.

The property sits on East Main Street on the curve across from the Old Roosevelt Mill complex, which was recently turned into residential units under the name Loom City Lofts.

According to a history of the area published by Loom City Lofts, the Minterburn Mill dates back to 1908 and once rented out work space to Roosevelt Mills, known for its sweaters.

Champagne said he envisions some type of access to the Hockanum River from the Minterburn property and ways to do that are being studied.
